A global classroom at UN meet

Three-day mock UN conference is part of global classrooms project of the UN Association of the US Model United Nations offers a chance to 700 students to raise issues concerning them.

"All members of the United Nations should stop trade with Turkey,” said a delegate from Liberia, while taking a firm stand at a meeting of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) committee on Sunday.

The delegate, sixteen-year-old Tanya Puri, garnered support from other members to get the resolution passed. Spirited deliberations by member-delegates on serious issues that face the world marked Day Two of the Delhi Public School Model United Nations 2006.

Being held in the Capital, this three-day mock United Nations conference is part of the global classrooms project of the United Nations Association of the US.

There are six committees for this three day meet, which concludes on Monday. These are: General Assembly (Plenary), International Atomic Energy Agency, United Nations Development Program, Human Rights Council, Security Council and Economic and Social Council.

Delnavaz Aibara of the DPS, who has donned the role of Under Secretary General and Rapporteur, UNDP, says the “thoughts, ideas and research that go into the preparation of MUNs are impressive.” Liang Zhi and Zhang Jiayin from China, who are representing Sierra Leone and Slovenia, also sounded enthusiastic. Said Shyama Chona, Principal, DPS, RK Puram, “This kind of application knowledge will stay with them for the rest of their lives.”
