As soon as you enter a house, you realise that there are certain things that actually make it a home and tell a unique story.
From pop-artish and Mughal motifed cushions, sheer curtains and beautifully stencilled walls to a 180-year-old hand-carved lamp — the Sud’s East Of Kailash bungalow is a travelogue of sorts that defines the family’s passion to explore. “Me and my husband love to pick up knick knacks from the places we visit. We like collecting things for our house, doesn’t matter whether it is Kasauli or Las Vegas,” says Rashma Sud, who owns a cake baking business, which she also runs from home.
The spacious bungalow is two-floored with a large living space downstairs, a master bedroom upstairs, rooms for children and their grandparents, and Rashma’s lawyer husband’s office.
The journey
What catches one’s fancy the most is the attention to decorative detail — from Oriental souvenirs bought from outside a temple in Bangkok, ivory lamp shades from Goa and a gilded table-top mummy miniature from Egypt, to a vintage Sherlock Holmes picture collection from London and dream-like drapes from Spain.
A self-made haven
So, who decides where the little memories collected from all over the globe are placed? “I take all the interior decisions myself — I have the final say. I did up the entire house, including painting the walls in my living room. Even for our bar, which originally just had dark polish on it — I took golden paint and mixed it with a dark brown shade to give it another coat,” reveals Rashma.
