Functional directors and executive directors of Air-India and Indian Airlines are engaged in hectic lobbying to bag plump posts in the newly-formed National Aviation Company of India Ltd (NACIL). Competition is also on to head the NACIL's six strategic business units and seven subsidiaries.
The government will announce the names of the new directors within a week. The eight functional directors will be members of the board while the existing 39 executive directors will handle new responsibilities.
Since Air-India Director, Finance, S Punhani is scheduled to retire this month, his counterpart in Indian Airlines S Chandrasekhar seems all set to bag the post in the new entity, according to government officials. However, there is no clarity regarding other names.
Other functional directors from Indian Airlines include Anita Khurana (commercial), Anup Srivastava (personnel) and Vipin Sharma (engineering). Their counterparts in Air-India include VK Verma (commercial), Amod Sharma (personnel) and KM Unni (engineering). For each directorial position there are at least two contenders. Some of them may be asked to head strategic business units as well. VK Verma will retire in December.
Since the NACIL will have 54 executive directors, several general managers are expected to be be promoted. "The number of executive directors will be reduced to 39 in three years," an official said.

The management of NACIL currently comprises of Chairman and Managing Director V Thulasidas, Deputy Managing Director Vishwapati Trivedi and three directors from the ministry, including Raghu Menon, RK Singh and Rajiv Bansal.
