Apropos of Arjun Sengupta’s article Against the grain (August 21), it is shocking that on the 60th anniversary of free India, every third Indian survives on Rs 20 a day. The government must realise that highlighting developments doesn’t prove that India is progressing. There is progress when each and every Indian secures a good standard of living. India stands as one nation, not as segments of various religions and castes. The government must execute schemes that satisfy the needs of all sections of society.

What ails India is the combined force of exploitation, corruption and the caste system. Our wealth is not shared with the poor towards whom we behave inhumanly. The corrupt swallow funds allotted for public welfare schemes. Naturally, the aam aadmi fails to identify with a ‘rising’ India.
