A shot at the shorts

When it comes to girls in smart shorts, I don’t think Mumbai comes anywhere close to Delhi. In the Capital, the ‘shorts’ journey starts right from the college campuses on to shopping malls and local markets.

Girls cannot wear anything modern in Delhi for fear of attracting unwanted attention from the city’s men. This is a constant complaint I keep hearing from some Delhi girls and most Mumbai ladies. But, when it comes to girls in smart shorts, I don’t think Mumbai comes anywhere close to Delhi. In the Capital, the ‘shorts’ journey starts right from the college campuses on to shopping malls and local markets.

Just recently, a friend of mine told me that she was going to wear a pair of shorts for a cocktail evening! She said it’s most comfortable. And I agree with her. Lengths, of course, remain in the realms of individual taste, but the variety of shorts available these days in Delhi is quite extensive.

Those who can’t afford brands, Janpath and Sarojini Nagar markets offer a wide range for as little as Rs 200. Most branded ones come at an average price tag of about Rs 2,000 for a pair.

While they come in many styles, one of my favourite for girls is the distressed look. Recently, at the Pitti Immagine Uomo in Florence, I saw at least four girls in distressed shorts that were torn right under the back pockets. It may not be suitable outdoors as it’s a wee bit revealing for the Indian sensibilities, but it’s very stylish nonetheless.

In the weather that we face these days, shorts come as an excellent option. And yes, guys (ignorant ones), please spare displaying your Boxer shorts in public! They are meant to be worn inside… not outside for God’s sake!
