The banned ULFA has termed the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) stand that it was not in favour of a sovereign Assam as "dangerous" and alleged the decision was not the consensus decision.

"The AASU's statement is merely a reiteration of the Indian government and it was being fed to the people by a section of the intelligentsia", ULFA Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa alleged in a statement e-mailed to the local media in last night.

The ULFA leader further urged all Assamese to realise that sovereignty was the only "practical solution" to all the problems facing the state.

The present AASU leadership was misleading the student community and they must desist from doing so, he said.

"AASU's decision not to support the issue of sovereignty was confined to a handful of its present leaders and the ULFA will in no way allow the student community to go against the struggle for sovereignty", Rajkhowa warned.

The AASU asked the ULFA to desist from making such "frivolous" statements "to hide its own shortcomings".
