THE AKHIL Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) welcomed the recommendation of the Lyngdoh Committee, constituted by the Supreme Court to restart direct elections for the students’ councils in higher education institutes.
In a press release issued here, ABVP national secretary Vishnudutt Sharma expressing gratitude to the committee members said it would help in raising able and normal leadership from among youth in the country.
He said the revival of the direct elections for students’ councils in universities and colleges would create a new atmosphere in the institutes and would curb the corrupt practices and illegal activities in the colleges.
The press release said during the last two decades confusion prevailed regarding students’ council elections and owing to different opinions in this regard, the Supreme Court constituted the committee headed by former chief election commissioner J M Lyngdoh and including chairman of the Association of Indian Universities – Dayanand Dongaonkar.
The committee toured different states and met academicians and representatives of students’ organisations, social and political organisations. The committee recently submitted report to the SC.
Among the recommendations of the committee include revival of students’ council elections, age limit of 26 years for the candidates and no involvement of political parties in the process.

{{/usCountry}}The ABVP submitted memoranda to this committee in Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Mumbai and Kolkata. The ABVP reiterated its demand to the MP Government regarding revival of the direct elections in State colleges and universities.
