A SERIES of accidents in past few days and uncontrolled traffic in the city have raised a question mark over the efficiency of traffic police.

Besides the unauthorised vehicles plying in the city coupled with rash driving by the youths in busy areas have added to the sufferings of the residents.
It may be recalled that a girl student died on the spot while another sustained serious injuries after they were hit by private buses in separate incidents in a gap of few hours in George Town on Monday.
A number of accidents are reported from various places in the city and outskirts due to reckless driving. Several spots in the city have no traffic cops and there is no check on the entry of heavy vehicles passing through the city during school hours.
Besides this, the traffic cops or the home guards deployed at important spots are not trained enough and unable to guide the traffic properly. However, senior traffic cops find these mishaps "routine" affair. Madhuri Tripathi, a resident of SP Marg said; "The Kanpur road near our house remains always busy and heavy vehicles keep on moving round the clock. We find it unsafe to send our children to school as traffic is not monitored during early hours and even during the day time."
Secretary Bharti Bhawan Library and senior member of Allahabad University Executive Council Sunit Vyas demanded posting of SP Traffic in the city. He said that the problem of traffic continues to worsen day-by-day owing to rapid increase in number of vehicles and poor traffic management in the city and only an IPS officer with vision can control the accidents. On being contacted CO Traffic Niti Sharma said that we have taken initiative to check such incidents and a letter has been sent to private transporters and UPSRTC to run their vehicles on fixed routes and stop at marked spots only. Strict instructions have been given to them to drive their vehicles under speed limit to avoid such incidents in future.

{{/usCountry}}"A radar with camera has been procured to check the speed of the vehicles in the city. The traffic cops will be sent for proper training after finding complications in practical use of these radars. Beside this, public will have to become aware and co-operate in solving the traffic problems", she added.
