Vimal Tomar, 34, had been an accused in the killing, which took place at Madhav College, Ujjain, on the day of the students' union election on August 26, 2006. Tomar, along with five others, was acquitted by a Nagpur sessions court in July 2009. The state did not appeal to a higher court.

The issue created commotion because activists of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students' outfit of the BJP, the ruling party in MP, were seen to be involved.

Tomar allegedly hanged himself at his uncle Dinesh Singh Tomar's house.

Police sources said though there was no suicide note in the house, a medical prescription was found in his trousers pocket. Additional superintendent of police Ramji Shrivastava said in the relatives' version the body was seen hanging from the ceiling.

They informed the police about the suicide attempt only after they had rushed him to hospital. The body was later sent for postmortem.

Tomar, a resident of Morena district, had spent about three years in jail during the trial.
