A police officer, on condition of anonymity, told Hindustan Times that there had been two similar incidents, one about six months back and the other on December 31, 2010, which came to light only after interrogating the accused.

"Two of these accused are local goons and were always on the lookout for couples who were looking for privacy in isolated spots. In all the previous instances, none of the victims could muster courage to report the matter to the police," the officer said.

"Until the victims come forward, we cannot make a strong case against the accused," he added.

What was different about the February 6 rape incident was that the engineer friend of the victim had been robbed of his laptop and mobile phone and decided to file a complaint for the robbery.

"But after he was grilled about why he was present at that lonely place and that too at such an odd time did he reveal the entire story of the gangrape," the official said.

The woman had gone there with that friend, whom she had met at a social networking site.

There, the accused overpowered both, and raped the woman. All five accused are currently lodged in Ghaziabad’s Dasna prison.

The police officials are now trying to convince the victim about her safety, security and privacy if she gives her statement before the court.
