A man threw acid at a girl in her sleep after she allegedly spurned his marriage proposal, in a West Bengal village on Wednesday night.
In the attack, the girl's mother and a sister also sustained burn injuries.
According to the complaint lodged with the police by the victims, the accused Sheikh Shakil had on several occasions sought the girl's hand in marriage.
But the girl, a class 12 student, and her family had turned down the offer. Shakil is brother-in-law of the girl's elder sister.
Spurned, Shakil on Wednesday night threw acid at the girl, her mother Nasrin Khatun and sister Yasmin, 13, a class 7 student, when they were asleep at their home in Narayandari village in Panskura area of East Midnapore district.
While the girl sustained burn injuries in face and knee, her sister is at risk of losing eyesight. The mother's face also sustained burn injuries, the police said.
East Midnapore superintendent of police Sukesh Kumar Jain, however, said a family dispute, not spurned marriage offer, was the motive behind the crime, adding the police have launched a hunt for the accused.
This is the third acid attack on women in the past two months in the state.
