Act opens new job vistas

THE ENERGY Conservation Act, 2001, has opened new vistas of employment for the science students holding degrees like B Tech. As per the Act, the provisions of which will become mandatory from March 1, 2007, all designated consumers will have to get energy audited by an accredited energy auditor and also designate or appoint energy manager.

As per the Act, the provisions of which will become mandatory from March 1, 2007, all designated consumers will have to get energy audited by an accredited energy auditor and also designate or appoint energy manager.

The Act has identified 15 energy intensive industries and other establishments and put them on the designated consumers’ list. These are aluminum, fertilisers, iron and steel, cement, pulp and paper, sugar, textile, chemicals, railways, port trust, transport sector, petrochemicals, power industry including thermal power stations, hydel power stations, electricity transmission companies, distribution companies besides commercial buildings and establishments.

Under the Act, the Central and the State governments may direct any designated consumer to furnish to the designated agency (UPPCL in UP’s case), in such form and manner and within such period as may be specified in the rules made by it, information with regard to the energy consumed by such consumers.

They Act also provides for heavy penalty if a consumer fails to adopt specified energy-saving measures and get energy audited. The auditors will then give suggestion on how to save energy. All these 15 designated consumers will have to take steps to promote energy conservation and get their energy audited like they get their accounts audited. For this, they will have to appoint energy managers and energy auditors. This will open new fields of employment for technical people.

A senior UPPCL official said that many retired power officials were pursuing the course with prospects of becoming energy auditors/managers in the time to come. He said that like chartered accountants, profession of the energy auditors/managers would become one of the most sought-after and most rewarding professions.
