The state government had earlier sent show cause notices to producers of various popular tele-serials, including Balika Badhu, Chhote Ustad and Uttaran. These notices were sent under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986, Juvenile Justice Act (care and protection of Children) 2006 and the Indian Penal Code.

"The NCPCR appreciates the strong stand the Maharashtra government has taken to protect children's rights. We think it is very important that children's comfort, well-being and overall growth must not be compromised in the name of talent search and other popular acts which are violative of their rights," the NCPCR chairperson, Shantha Sinha said in the letter.

The Commission also requested a report from the state government in this regard. "We would very much appreciate if copy of your directives is sent to the commission in view of the fact that the commission is also working on the same issue. We would like to take this agenda forward in rest of the country based on your experience in the matter," the letter said.
