"ADB stands ready to support you in whatever way we can," bank chief Haruhiko Kuroda said in a letter to Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono released to the press in Manila.

"As part of the ongoing preparation for ADBs new medium-term country strategy for Indonesia, we are exploring how best we can support Indonesia in disaster preparedness as well as post-disaster management," it added.

The Indonesian social affairs ministry on Wednesday raised the death toll from the tsunami that smashed into Java's southern coast on Monday to 396. About 700 people were injured and 187 remained missing.
