The Bombay High Court, on Wednesday, summoned Andheri court’s additional public prosecutor Chandrakant Patil to clarify allegations of his involvement in a threat to a magistrate inquiring an alleged fake encounter case.
The HC has asked prosecutor Patil to remain present in court on December 11.
Metropolitan Magistrate, Railway Mobile Court, Mrs Shaikh wrote to the Registrar General of the HC on February 26, 2009, stating that she was threatened by Assistant Commissioner of Police Pradip Suryavanshi. The magistrate alleged that Suryavanshi used Patil’s cellphone to threaten her. The letter also states that Suryavanshi threatened the president of the Bar Association — Balwant Patil — and asked him to sign on a blank piece of paper, which would be used to write a complaint against the magistrate.
Suryavanshi had filed an affidavit refuting the allegations: “I have never, directly or indirectly in any manner, intimidated the honourable magistrate nor ever sought to bring any indignity to the office or person.”
Magistrate Shaikh has been conducting the mandatory judicial inquiry required after every police encounter. Ramprasad Gupta — brother of alleged Chhota Rajan aide Ramnarayan Gupta, who was gunned down in an encounter in 2006, filed this petition seeking police protection following alleged threats from Suryavanshi.
