Trinamool Congress MP Subhendu Adhikary on Monday launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury for fielding independent candidates against alliance candidates in all the four seats of Murshidabad. Calling him Mir Jafar, Adhikary slammed Chowdhury at the latter’s home turf, Murshidabad, while campaigning for alliance candidates at Bhagabangola and Sagardighi.

Without taking Chowdhury’s name, Adhikary said, “Some people don’t want to remove the Left Front from power. So, they are fielding independent candidates against the alliance.”

“This election is the like the second Independence battle of India. In its 34 years regime, the Left Front has snatched our political right. This battle is between the Left and Mamata-Sonia led alliance,” said Adhikary while participated in the election campaign of Sagir Hossain, Trinamool candidate from Bhagabangola.

“This is an election to elect MLAs — not a Behrampore club election. The party that gets 148 MLAs will come to power. Some persons are acting like Mir Jafar here. If the votes are divided, then who will reap the benefits?”

Adhikari said, “We know Trinamool is organisationally weak in Murshidabad. But we extended our full cooperation to Congress in the Lok Sabha elections. Now, it’s their turn to help us.”

Throughout his speech, Adhikari took no names, but kept pointing towards Chowdhury. “If he (Adhir) is so powerful, then why did he fail to retain the hold of Murshidabad zila parishad. I can only say that the two party chiefs —Banerjee and Gandhi, formed the alliance by responding to the call of people. At Siliguri, Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee urged masses to cast vote in favour of alliance candidates only. Banerjee has already contributed to the state’s development as the Railway minister. We, too, will bring a flood of development in Murshidabad if the alliance comes in to power.”

Adhikary also participated in the election campaign of Subrata Saha, Trinamool candidate from Sagardighi.
