THE CITY police on Sunday arrested two persons and claimed to have busted a medical admission racket in Era Medical College.
While the authorities in Era Medical College denied any knowledge of involvement of the college staff in the racket, the police did not rule out the possibility of an admission fraud being run in connivance with the college employees.
The racket was unearthed when the cops, acting on the complaint of Rajendra Kumar Gupta, a Varanasi resident, zeroed in on Akhilesh Tripathi and Animesh Mishra, both residents of C block in Indira Nagar and recovered Rs 8.83 lakh from them. Both had taken Rs 10 lakh from Rajendra’s son Yash for getting him admitted to Era Medical College.
“Of the two, Tripathi’s two brothers, Indra Mani Tripathi and Dev Mani Tripathi, are doctors in Barabanki and Lucknow. The possibility of a larger racket for admission in medical colleges after we piece together the missing links cannot be ruled out,” station house officer (SHO) of Ghazipur police station Mohan Verma told HT.
What’s more, Akhilesh Tripathi had even given an advertisement in a local Hindi daily in Varanasi urging students to contact him for admission to medical colleges of the state. That Rajendra Gupta, the victim, is also from Varanasi has led the cops to believe that there could be several more people who might have been similarly taken for a ride by the duo. “We are gathering more details about the advertisement. There were several mobile numbers that were given in the advertisement and it’s possible that we may be able to unearth a bigger racket,” Verma said.
On being asked, president of Era Medical College Maulana Kalbe Sadiq said he would comment only after conducting an inquiry. “All I can say is that no one in my knowledge takes any donation in the college. Nor is anyone authorised,” he said. Maulana Sadiq informed HT that regular fees in his college was Rs 3.42 lakh per annum along with Rs 58,000 as hostel fees. “This is what we take,” he said.
