In a new twist to the phone tapping controversy, the main opposition BJP on Monday alleged that the telephones of many of its senior leaders, including Leader of Opposition LK Advani were tapped during the Volcker controversy.
"According to the information, many telephones of several senior party leaders were tapped during the Volcker controversy," Party spokesman Prakash Javadekar said.
He said that the government should come clean on the issue. Party Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu had made similar allegation in Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had joined Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in alleging that their phones were being tapped.
BJP Deputy leader in Lok Sabha VK Malhotra had demanded a probe by a joint parliamentary committee into the telephone tapping allegations.
