The Pakistani paramilitary troops and the civilians had gone on a tractor to collect firewood near the Tirkha border post in southwestern Balochistan province, provincial spokesman Raziq Bugti said.

"The Afghan troops claimed the Pakistanis were inside Afghan territory and drove them into Afghanistan," Bugti said.

"Tribal elders and officials on both sides of the border are in contact and we expect the Pakistanis will be released later today (Wednesday)," he added.

A security official speaking on condition of anonymity said around two dozen Afghan soldiers had crossed into Pakistan and seized the people at gunpoint.

The incident comes amid a war of words between the two countries over a surge in militant violence along Afghanistan's porous 2,500-kilometres border with Pakistan.
