After an impressive performance in the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi has now set his eyes on Haryana, where the assembly polls will be held on October 13.
The Youth Congress, of which the 39-year-old Gandhi scion is in charge, will soon launch a membership drive in the state.
“Our target is to enroll seven to eight lakh members in Haryana over the next two months,” a senior Youth Congress leader told HT on the condition of anonymity. “These members will naturally become Congress voters and also add up several lakh others to the party kitty.”
Once the membership drive is over, the party would begin the process of holding organisational elections in the state.
Youth Congress elections have already been held in Punjab, Gujarat, Puducherry and Daman and Diu. Along with Haryana, the four-tier poll process at panchayat, assembly, parliamentary and state levels will also be held in Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Tripura, besides Chandigarh.
Gandhi has also revamped the youth wing’s election commission to expedite the democratisation process.

{{/usCountry}}MP Vijay Inder Singla from Punjab will now look after the wing’s finances, while Prakash Joshi (Uttarakhand) will oversee the election operations and administration. Shakir Sanadi from Karnataka has been put in charge of human resource management.
MP Manicka Tagore from Tamil Nadu will now look after the Youth Congress training department.
The commission has to complete the elections across the country by December 2010 — a deadline set by Gandhi to bring about complete internal democracy in the Youth Congress.
