AIR FORCE Wives Welfare Association (AFWWA) Day was celebrated by the ladies of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on October 15. Local AFWWA president Rita Varma addressed the ladies and wished them on the occasion. She said over the years, the sphere of AFWWA work had widened considerably.
AFWWA was formed on October 28, 1970 as a registered body to provide assistance to families of deceased/ disabled/ retired/serving personnel of the Indian Air Force. AFWWA also extends its helping hand to the poor and needy, to senior citizens, spastic children, orphans etc.
The Association which focuses on family welfare and rehabilitation/care of widows, mentally retarded and handicapped children has taken special steps to identify itself with some national welfare projects. It has successfully perused programmes such as adult literacy and preservation of environment.
AFWWA has also adopted villages around air force bases which lack in basic amenities. It organises health camps at regular intervals with the help of specialists from air force and civil hospitals for check-ups and treatment of ailing persons.
Over the years AFWWA has grown both in stature and strength. AFWWA has donated medical equipment to various IAF units giving great impetus to the improvement of medical facilities available in the Medical Inspection Rooms/Hospitals. AFWWA has also contributed significantly towards improving facilities in labour rooms and dental centres. Improvement in the quality of life of women is one of the basic aims of AFWWA.

The sale of prospectus for the Faculty of Management Studies (FOMS) at College of Material Management (CMM), Jabalpur began from October 15.
FOMS has been one of the institutes for Army personnel providing excellent educational opportunities. Affiliated to the University of Jabalpur (RDVV) the Institute has been granted autonomous status and is registered as an ‘Independent Government College’ with University Grants Commission (UGC). Courses are approved by the All- India Council of Technical Education.
Exclusively for children of serving regular Army personnel or retired Army personnel with regular pension, wards of war widows in receipt of liberalised pension are also eligible for admission.
A written test is held usually on the fourth Tuesday of January and the courses begin from July. Institute offers various
courses like Masters’ Degree in Business Administration and Masters’ Degree in Business Administration through Distance Learning programme.
Post Graduate Diploma in Materials Management (PGDMM), Management and Executive Development Programmes. Research facilities for doctoral studies are also available for scholars.

The George Cross (GC) is the highest British award for bravery when an enemy is not present. It is equal in status to the Victoria Cross (VC). The GC is a civil award so anyone can be decorated with it, from a schoolgirl to a fire-fighter. Many have also been awarded to members of the armed forces, including bomb disposal personnel.
George Cross was posthumously awarded to Sergeant Michael Willets who served with the 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. On May 25, 1971, a terrorist placed a suitcase bomb in the reception area of Springfield Road Police Station in Belfast.
When the alarm was raised, Sergeant Willets began to help people escape from the building. He held the door open for everyone and then stood in the doorway protecting those taking cover.
Willets was killed by the blast when the bomb went off. By shielding the men, women and children who were trying to leave the station, Sergeant Willets saved their lives at the cost of his own.
