“It was a mild punishment and the boy was not hurt,” said Dr Jain. He showed a CD about the incident to the media persons.

Sticking to his claim of mild punishment, he said it was unfortunate for him to learn that father of the student was defending the mistake of his son. “It was true that I slapped him but that was not meant to be the violence but a lesson regarding right behaviour,’’ he clarified.

He said that for him students are like his children and he always believes in shaping them as good citizens.

“Even on many occasions, parents slap their children. Does that mean they want to hurt them? I do not think so,’’ said the president. “I do not believe in shaping them up by resorting to violence but slapping them once or twice is a normal thing,” he added.

The Chief Minister directed to hold an inquiry into the incident.
