A 17-year-old girl is the talk of Agra city after she saved three children from drowning in the fast-flowing Yamuna, despite the fact that she doesn't know how to swim.
Satyawati, daughter of a labourer, is now recuperating in a hospital as water entered her lungs during the effort to pull the children out.
She had gone to bathe in the river two days ago when she saw her neighbour's children, Chotu, Anil and Deepak, crying for help. She managed to pull them out safely, despite being on the verge of a physical collapse.
In the process she swallowed a lot of polluted water.
Senior Superintendent Police G.K. Goswami met her in the hospital and presented her a cheque. Some local groups are following suit.
The Agra Vikas Manch has decided to honour her in May. District officials said they would recommend her name for presidential honour.
