ABOUT 31 lakh people succumbed to Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) across the world in the year 2005 alone, said Dr OP Mishra of the IMS-BHU. He also said 49 lakh fresh cases were reported last year.
He was addressing a training workshop on HIV/AIDS here on Sunday. The local chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), in collaboration with the National AIDS Control Organisation and the Clinton Foundation, organised the workshop.
Dr Mishra said there were around four crore AIDS cases across the world till the end of the year 2005.
“Over 14,000 fresh cases are reported per day worldwide,” he said.
“Twelve thousand patients are in the age group of 15 to 49 years and two thousand below the age of 15 years.”
Dr Mishra also told participating physicians about the latest techniques of diagnosis, newer aspects of AIDS treatment and symptoms of infection. Dr RN Prasad of the IMS-BHU also addressed the workshop.
Earlier, former IMA president Dr BR Thukral, its State secretary Dr OP Tewari, Dr OP Mishra and Dr RN Prasad inaugurated the workshop.
