The weeklong course is meant for government health policy makers, voluntary groups and others working in the field of HIV prevention and care, said Bakul Dholakia, director of the school.

"The focus of the programme is on managerial challenges involved in conducting HIV/AIDS prevention and care and their implementation," he said. With 5.13 million cases, India ranks second only to South Africa in terms of the number of people infected with HIV.

IIM Ahmedabad already has a centre for management of health services, which conducts research on mental health and stress.

The institute is also working on a course for officials in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to help them streamline their HIV/AIDS programmes.
