Resident doctors at the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will observe a black day on Thursday to protest the Central government’s decision to go ahead with the reservations in postgraduate level. The doctors are not ruling out abstaining from work. The Supreme Court had ruled against reservation of seats for the postgraduates saying once a student is a graduate, he falls within the ambit of ‘educational creamy layer.’
After the General Body Meeting on April 21, resident doctors at AIIMS had given a 48-hour ultimatum to the government to withdraw reservation, failing to which they had threatened extreme action.
The doctors will wear black badges with the message ‘Black Day - Against disrespect shown to the Honourable Supreme Court in implementation of OBC quota at postgraduate level.’
Meanwhile, Youth For Equality — an anti-reservation body of students from all over the country — had sought a report on the Moily Committee recommendations of September 2006. “We had asked if there was any increase of seats in the general quota, recruitment of teachers, funds allocated and improvement in the student-teacher ratio. The responses to all our questions were in the negative,” said Dr Kumar Harsh, President, Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA), AIIMS.
“If the government has not followed its own recommendations, how can it force reservation on institutes? By implementing the 27 per cent without any infrastructure improvement, they are not just compromising on the general category seats, but also on the quality of education,” he added.
