A group of AIIMS faculty members, doctors and interns on Saturday wrote to the Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss seeking the removal of hospital director P Venugopal, on a collision course with the Health Ministry.

The letter, with signatures of nearly 200 resident doctors, students, interns, employees and faculty members, accused the director of 'instigating' a group of AIIMS employees to dishonour and gherao dean RC Deka.

"We condemn the manner in which P Venugopal instigated residents and students to harass, dishonour, physically assault and gherao hospital dean RC Deka for more than eight hours," they said in the letter.

Flaying Venugopal for "illegally calling a meeting of residents, faculty and students and levelling false charges against the governing body, institute, ministry of health and Government of India," they said "his action has lowered the dignity of AIIMS and other administrative posts."

They demanded that the director be removed from his post immediately "before he further damages the dignity" of the prestigious institute.

However, Ramadoss had strongly denied the charge and blamed certain doctors in AIIMS of converting the institution into a 'political hub'.

A section of doctors had also come out in support of Venugopal and demanded removal of Ramadoss from the post of AIIMS president.
