“The Central Government should immediately come forward with a legislation declaring the AMU a minority institution under Article 30 of the Constitution,” demanded AIMF president Nehaluddin at a convention of the Forum here on Sunday.

He said it was most unfortunate that the HC stripped the institution of its minority character on the assumption that the Muslims did not establish it. He, however, hastened to add that the Muslim community had full faith in the country’s judiciary.

The convention unanimously passed a resolution demanding that the Parliament should forthwith pass an Act to be named Aligarh Muslim University (removal of anomalies) Act 2006 to restore the minority character of the AMU. He also urged the government to show same treatment to the riot victims of Mumbai, Gujarat and other states as were shown to the victims of the anti-Sikh riots. A resolution to this effect was also adopted at the convention.
