The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) said on Sunday that the observation of the Law Commission that bigamy conflicts with "the Islamic Law in letter and spirit" is wrong, unfounded and mistaken.
The spirit of Islam and Islamic law cannot be found anywhere except in the Quran and the Hadith which are the main
sources of Islamic law and both give permission to marry more than one wife but not more than four, said AIMPLB Assistant General Secretary, Mohammedd Abdul Rahim Quraishi in a statement.
The practice of the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) and the Muslims, not only in India but all over the world prove the fact that Islamic law permits polygamy upto four wives, he said.
"It is very unfortunate and beyond comprehension that the Law Commission of India came to a conclusion which is against the Quran and tradition of the Prophet (PBUH) of Islam and the practice of the Muslims all over the world," he said.
It may be noted that Muslims have not been exhorted or encouraged to marry more than one woman, but they have been permitted to do so on the condition that they treat their wives equally, Quraishi said.
