Air India follows Jet, cuts fares by half

In a move that could be a big festival bonanza for air passengers, all airlines in India have announced a 50 per cent cut in the airfares for the next three days. The move followed after Jet Airways decided to cut fares by 50 per cent.

Jet Airways on Tuesday announced a 50 per cent discount on fares in select sectors for three days starting Wednesday. Air India immediately followed suit.

While Jet started normal domestic operations after a five-day strike that ended Monday, offered the discounted fares on its entire network to bring back lost passengers, Air India reduced fares to match its rival.

Discounted fares will be available only for travel on Jet Airways and Jet Konnect and an average ticket Delhi-Mumbai return ticket would cost about Rs 5,500.

According to Air India, the discounted fares will be available on select sectors that include Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Srinagar, Mumbai-Nagpur, Delhi-Bangalore, Delhi-Chennai, and Kolkata –Mumbai sectors.

A Delhi-Mumbai one-way ticket on Air India domestic during three-day discount period would cost Rs 2729. While a one-way Delhi-Hyderabad ticket post discount would cost Rs 3329.

“We are offering the discounted fares to match what is being offered by our rival carriers,” an Air India official told the Hindustan Times.
