This was stated by Dr SK Katiyar, principal and dean faculty of medicine GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, while inaugurating the Respiratory Update-2006, organised by Allahabad Medical Association here on Sunday.

Dr Katiyar said that respiratory diseases were increasing worldwide, more so in under-developed and developing countries like India. Main contributing factor to this is high pollution in our atmosphere. Newer diseases like SARS & bird flu are also emerging. The viral diseases are coming in a big way which are primarily affecting the respiratory system.

About 400 delegates from UP and outside attended the CME. The guest of honour was Dr Ashok Agarwal vice president IMA UP and Dr DP Mishra of PMHS Association UP Dr AK Bansal president AMA welcomed the guests.

Dr. C.L. Arya of Meerut spoke on steroids in brochial asthma and foreign body in tracheobronchial tree Dr. Vikram Sarabhai of New Delhi spoke on diagnosis and management of pulmonary embolism.

Dr. Deepak Talwar of NOIDA spoke on severe community acquired pneumonia and role of NIV in COPD. Dr. ML Bhatt of Lucknow spoke on recent trends in lung cancer.

Dr. Nadeem Arshad from Gorakhpur led the panel discussions on OSA and CCS.
Dr. Ashish Tandon organizing secretary, conducted the programme and vote of thanks was given by Dr. VK. Gupta secretary of Allahabad Medical Association. Dr. GS Sinha president-elect also gave his deliberation.
