He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Pre-conference course of 41st Annual Conference of UPSOS 'Drishti Samagam' at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, MD Eye Hospital, here on Friday.

Dr Tewari said retinal diseases cause irreversible damage to the eyes. "The early diagnosis is advisable in retinal diseases for better treatment. There is also need to take care of children suffering from refractive errors. If ignored, the child may suffer from total blindness and ultimately become a burden on family and society. A paediatric eye care unit is being established in every eye hospital with the assistance of the Orbis International," he said.

Guest of honours, Dr RV Azad from Dr RP Centre of Ophthalmic Sciences and Prof TP Lahane from JJ Hospital, Mumbai, also laid stress on early diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases.

The inaugural session was followed by live phacoemulsification, SICS and other advance surgeries by Dr AK Grover, Dr JS Titiyal, Dr Harbans Lal, Dr TP Lahane and Dr Ragini. The live surgery session was chaired by Dr RN Mishra, organising secretary Dr SP Singh, UPSOS president Dr Vipin Behari, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology Dr Kamaljit Singh and Dr MP Tandon.
