The Russian boxer came to the notice during the 2003 European Championship where he was utterly dominant. In the quarterfinals of the Championship Alekseyev's punch injured his opponent's arm and ended the bout at the very start. That victory qualified him for Athens.

His very knockout punches could see him win the gold at the Athens Games. He is one of the very few amateur fighters capable of a knockout in every fight.
