LEADER OF the Opposition in the State Assembly Lalji Tandon was detained at the Kanpur Central Railway Station and sent back to Lucknow this morning. He was traveling by the Gomti Express on way to riot- affected Aligarh.

A team headed by SP (city) Sabha Raj and ADM (city) Abrar Ahmed asked the BJP leader to cut short his visit at Kanpur itself. The officers explained to him that his presence could vitiate the atmosphere in Aligarh and therefore he would not be allowed to proceed any further.
The BJP leader left the AC coach without any protest and silently joined officials in the GRP waiting room. Later, he wished to refresh himself at the Circuit House and the demand was promptly met by the authorities.
Earlier, BJP MLA from Cantt Satish Mahana reached the station with a handful of supporters and insisted on accompanying Tandon to Aligarh. But Tandon dissuaded him saying law could not be breached.
tandon stayed at the Circuit House for nearly an hour and met hordes of BJP leaders, including city unit president Rakesh Sonkar, Anoop Awasthi and Shri Krishna Dixit. Later, talking to mediapersons, Tandon played up his detention saying it was undemocratic. “The government tends to hide the reality of Aligarh. My visit was aimed at bringing that out the truth but the government stalled my mission,” he said.

If the BJP, he said, returned to power a law more competent than the POTA and the TADA would be enacted to deal with militancy. He blamed madarsas for increase in militancy and demanded the government to keep a check on religious institutions.
