In a letter to the President, Damodar Acharya, 69, a retired teacher, wrote that the police kept his son in illegal custody almost for the past two months except for a couple of times when he was allowed to go home and allegedly tried to frame him.

“I have suffered tremendous mental agony and had to be hospitalised as a result of the treatment meted out to my son,” he writes, adding that, “I am a poor man and there is nobody ready to listen to our grievances so I should be given the permission to end my life”.

The copies of the letter were forwarded to the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, MP Human Rights Commission,Congress president Sonia Gandhi and DGP Madhya Pradesh. Earlier, there were differences of opinion among various investigative officers in the police over his involvement in the crime.

The official earlier heading the probe had refused to accept that Acharya committed the murder following which the case was handed over to Crime Branch that within a week named him as killer.
