Amar wants action on 44 complaints

Stung by the disqualification of Jaya Bachchan, Samajwadi Party has demanded action from the President on 44 similar complaints.

Stung by the disqualification of Jaya Bachchan as its Rajya Sabha member on grounds that she held a office of profit, Samajwadi Party on Friday demanded "non-partisan" action from President APJ Abdul Kalam on 44 similar complaints.

"I believe that there are 44 similar complaints against highly respected people in important positions at the national level," SP general secretary Amar Singh said.

"I believe that the President (APJ Abdul Kalam) will take a decision on them in a non-partisan manner," he added.

Responding to Samajwadi Party allegations of a "Congress conspiracy" behind disqualification of Bachchan's membership as "vague" and "politically motivated", senior Congress leader Motilal Vora said law was taking its own course in the matter.

"I think the administration of Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh is well-known to everybody now. And as far as the remarks of Samjwadi Party leaders are concerned, let them see their own face in the mirror," he said when asked about allegations of Congress' attempt to malign SP ahead of assembly polls in the state.

Reacting to the expulsion of Bachchan, suspended SP leader Raj Babbar said "the bankrupt leaders of SP have insulted such a great artiste like Jaya Bachchan.

"The responsibility for this (Bachchan's expulsion) completely lies with the Samajwadi Party."
