"I'm not a politician. I won't campaign," Bachchan told reporters at a promotional event for the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards.

India will hold a general election between April 16 and May 13, a mammoth process in which 714 million people will be able to cast their votes.

Bachchan, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Congress party in 1984, is now close to Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.

The 66-year-old actor, arguably India's biggest superstar, left active politics two decades ago.

But his wife, actress Jaya Bachchan, is a member of the Rajya Sabha, having been nominated by the Samajwadi Party.

Bachchan also denied media reports that his daughter-in-law, actress Aishwarya Rai, had been offered an election ticket.
