The Protection and Security branch of the Mumbai police on Monday decided to upgrade Amitabh’s security level from the present X category to Y category: this means Amitabh will henceforth be accompanied by two armed Personal Security Officers around the clock, apart from the existing cover from the local police station and private agency.

Just last year, his security had been brought down to X category from Y category.

Apart from this, the Bachchans’ Juhu bungalow will turn into a fortress with additional guards.

Amitabh’s wife Jaya, being a Member of Parliament (MP), already has the security of armed guards. The couple’s son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya are additions to the security scheme. Both of them will have one guard from the local (Juhu) police station around the clock.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K.L. Prasad confirmed the move. “I can only say that they have been given extra protection, both personal and at their residences,” he said, refusing to give details.

Prasad said over 350 MNS activists had been “rounded up” on Monday “as part of both preventive as well as substantive action”.
