In a major setback to the Centre, a division bench of the Allahabad High Court termed the granting of minority status to Aligarh Muslim University as unconstitutional.

Upholding an earlier ruling the court also quashed 50 per cent reservation for Muslims.

The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice AN Ray and Justice Ashok Bhushan on petitions filed by the central government and AMU challenging the single-judge verdict on October 4, 2005.
