India has the dubious distinction of being known as the country that likes to ensure girls are never born. And wealthy states like Punjab and haryana have the worst child sex ratios. However, the village of Dulchi Ke is an exception.

Dulchi Ke lacks basic infrastructure, health and even education but has done well to restore the child sex ratio balance. A recent survey shows 1,400 girls are born for every 1,000 boys here.

Village head Avtar Singh and his family are an example for all. There are five brothers and a sister with 20 children, 12 of them girls. In 2003, when Avtar was elected sarpanch, the sex ratio was 800 girls to 1,000 boys. To restore the balance, he held awareness camps and banned sex-detection and sex-selective abortions. Thanks to him, and many others like him, Dulchi Ke is a better place today.
