An ungrateful polity
Arun Prakash in It pays to have security (October 13) is correct in stating that our politicians have not shown any sign of maturity or fortitude so far in favour of the security forces. We are a nation of spoilers, unable to give people their due. The article summarises the disappointment of the armed forces of this nation. We should have some respect for our brethren in uniform. In fact, all Service Chiefs should have expressed their views in public to let the whole world know about the anomalies in the Sixth Central Pay Commission.

Deal for a better future
The editorial Deal’s done, now to take advantage of it (October 13) alludes to the pride of the nation in taking a giant leap forward by concluding the Indo-US civil nuclear deal. Despite all the hurdles, India has finally succeeded in entering the prestigious nuclear group. India will now be able to carry out nuclear commerce, ending 34 years of isolation and be able to meet its energy requirements. The deal has raised our stature in the world as a nation which counts. We must consolidate our achievement and convert this deal into attainable objectives like raising our citizens’ quality of life.

The best way to silence the critics of the nuclear deal is to show that it is advantageous to India. Our nuclear reactors had been starving for fuel supplies for decades. If this deal can safeguard our future energy requirements and ensure a clean supply of power for our homes and factories, we should welcome it. As for technicalities like enrichment and reprocessing conditions or the implications of a future nuclear test, the government will do well to be more transparent to avoid any future embarrassment.

Cong should lead by example
With reference to Pankaj Vohra’s article Time to rise above politics (Between us, October 13), it is time for the Congress to introspect and rise above political rivalries and give a direction to the nation. The Congress is the powerhouse of Indian politics, and, given the threat from casteist and regional forces, it is to the Congress that people are looking for succour. It is time for the Congress to save the country from disintegration.

Spread the message of peace
The report Uneasy Adilabad (October 13) is heart-rending and should stir the conscience of the nation. It is time for all religious leaders and politicians to come together and end this mindless violence. It is not enough that there are whispering protests and condemnations in seclusion. All right-minded intellectuals must come together to counter the damage done by fanatics.

With reference to the report India story at stake (October 11), the mere fact that foreign institutional investors withdrew $9.2 billion from the Indian market does not amount to a weakening of the Indian economy. We must remain optimistic that within a short time India will re-emerge, even stronger, as an attractive destination for foreign investment.
