Kicking off the party's election campaign in the South, Congress president Sonia Gandhi chided the Left for claiming undue credit for most of the welfare programmes being pursued by the UPA government at the Centre.

Addressing a mammoth rally in Kochi, Kerala, on Saturday, Sonia said, "We reject our opponents' politics of obstruction, politics of violence and the politics of sloganeering.” She asked the Congress’ rank and file to fight unitedly against the Left parties.

However, the Congress president did not utter a word about the breakaway faction led by K. Karunakaran, indicating that she would not easily forgive rebellion in the party.
