THEY CANNOT match the grace of shimmering gold neither do they have the parallels of valuable stones. But they are attractive undoubtedly and they are sure to enhance the personality like any other jewellery does.
Surprisingly they are made of paddy and wooden beads and they are the latest item on sale at Gandhi Shilp Bazar at Allahabad Haat.
The innovative jewellery of paddy and wooden beads has been designed by siblings Putul Das and Champa Das who belong to Kolkata and they are on their first visit to the city.
"It all started on the day of Raksha Bandhan festival when the idea to make a 'rakhi' out of paddy struck our mind.
However much later we felt we could do several other experiments with it. And thus we started with our venture of making jewellery out of paddy", said Champa Das.
Right from necklace to earrings and bracelets, the duo have shown their artistic streak in almost all the designs to make them as attractive as possible. Topped with coloured wooden beads and sometimes also with cut stones, the pieces have been rendered a charming outlook. In few pendants the use of bamboo has also been made. The designer bindis are also available on which different patterns have been made by sticking paddy to it.
"It is necessary to properly dry the paddy well under the sun so that they remain unaffected by the attack of insects and fungus. The paddy is also processed. Afterwards it could be coloured if needed. However, we try and retain the natural colour of the paddy", said Putul Das.

{{/usCountry}}Nylon thread has been used to make the necklace. "The item doesn't get damaged due to moisture but too much exposure should be avoided. We have also kept the prices affordable", she added.
Both the sisters have been to several places across the country in a bid to participate in the fairs and exhibitions.
