The state Cabinet, which held an emergency meeting tonight under the chairmanship of Chief Minister K Rosaiah, felt Chidambaram's statement was "very clear" on the statehood issue.

"We all should respect it," Ministers Danam Nagender, N Raghuveera Reddy, Pitani Satyanarayana, J Geeta Reddy, Aanam Ramanarayana Reddy and Galla Aruna Kumari told reporters after the meeting. The ministers maintained that there was "nothing to read between the lines" in the Union Home Minister's statement.

"The process on Telangana will continue with due consultations with all parties concerned," they said and urged people in Telangana and Rayalaseema regions to give up their agitations and help restore normalcy in the state.

They also requested the MPs, MLAs and MLCs, who resigned from their posts in protest against the proposed bifurcation of the state, to withdraw their resignations immediately.
