The family of civil engineer P Krishna Rao in Gannavaram in coastal district of Krishna on Monday offered special prayers at a temple for his return while the state government said it was in touch with authorities in Assam to seek his release.

Rao, 50, was working as project manager on a national highway project in Assam.

According to officials of Gayatri Construction, an infrastructure firm he was working with for last 10 years, Rao was abducted by five armed men at Boipur in Kokhrajhar district.

"We worried over his safety. We appeal to the state and central governments to rescue him," said Rajeshwari, Rao's wife.

She along with their two children, aged 14 and 16 years, held 'puja' (prayer) in a local temple in Gannavaram for his safe return.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah spoke to his Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi over phone.

State government officials said Gogoi assured Rosaiah that the government was taking all possible steps to seek safe release of the abducted engineer. He said the state police had formed special teams for the purpose.

It is still not known if the militants had put forward any demands before authorities in Assam.
