Reacting to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's description of the Mayawati government as "corrupt and insensitive", Uttar Pradesh BSP president Swami Prasad Maurya on Monday accused the former of being disrespectful to the people of the state.

"It is wrong as well as disrespectful to say that people from Uttar Pradesh are going to Maharashtra and Punjab to beg. They are not beggars, but hardworking people with a lot of pride," Maurya said.

In a five-page statement, Maurya said Gandhi's comment that chief minister Mayawati did not have the time to visit Bundelkhand was also "wrong".

He said Mayawati had visited the region several times and she was deeply connected with the grassroots.

The BJP too hit out at Gandhi, reminding him of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's words that speeches won't do.

"Sonia Gandhi has said speeches won't combat corruption. We want to say that speeches can't change the fate of UP," said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain.

He asked whether the money generated out of the various scams had gone to the poor.

Hussain said while Gandhi talked about atrocities on UP Dalits, he did not utter a word on Congress-ruled Haryana.
