Another phone tap revealed in TN

Even as the DMK government named a retired High Court judge to probe the leakage of the tapped phone conversation between its Chief Secretary LK Tripathi and its anti-corruption police official, another instance of tapping of senior officials came to light on Thursday.

Jaya TV on Wednesday relayed the tapped conversation between P Rajamanickam, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and ADGP of the anti-corruption wing Upadhyaya asking him not to transfer a fellow officer Rathinsabapathy from his department even after his promotion.

In another conversation between the two, Rajamanickam asks the police official to ask one of his officers to go slow in an investigation into the out-of-turn allotment of an engineering seat in Anna University to the son of an IPS officer.

AIADMK MLAs had wanted to raise the issue in the Assembly on Wednesday and even brandished the CD containing the conversation, but were not permitted by the Speaker who said a judicial probe had already been ordered. Walking out in protest, the MLAs demanded the resignation of Karunanidhi citing the 1988 resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde after instances of phone tapping of politicians and officials were made public. “The judicial enquiry by a retired judge is nothing but an eyewash,” senior AIADMK MLA K Sengottaiyan told reporters.
