What his family did not expect was that the 21-year-old would not make it to the football field again. The Sudanese student became the 16th victim of the Pune bomb blast when he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Anas was at German Bakery, with his friend, Amjad-Al-Gozoly, when the blast occurred on February 13.

Amjad, a volleyball player, died in hospital on Saturday while Anas suffered severe leg injuries. His condition was improving but deteriorated on Tuesday evening. He passed away on Wednesday morning. His parents and four siblings were in Pune at the time.

Prof. Iqbal Shaikh from Poona College remembered Anas as a “good student with a great passion for football”.

Anas’ body was taken to the college campus for students to pay their respects. Eltayiza Attal, Anas’s roommate, said the latter loved passing time at German Bakery. “He was jolly and mischievous. He had a large friend circle,” Attal said. “He was a good cook.” Friends also remembered that the Shah Rukh Khan fan loved the film Chak De! India.

Anas is the fifth foreigner and second Sudanese to be killed in the blast.
