Karan Thapar’s article (Sunday Sentiments, July 8) has raised a pertinent question. Isn’t the first citizen of India expected to be above board? In the US, the conduct of the person occupying the highest office is expected to be exemplary. In India, the general public upholds high moral values, while those in high positions are often charged with corruption and nepotism. Isn’t it Ms Patil’s moral duty to deny the charges against her or withdraw from the competition?

RM Patwardhan’s piece Man from Chhapra (Radio Days, July 8) on Chitragupt was an excellent one. Chitragupt, who was an assistant to SN Tripathi, was also a good singer. Some of the songs he recorded were Mat pita ki seva from the film Bhakta Pundalik and Bhagwan tujhe maen khat likhta from Manchala. They are still popular with a section of today’s audience and are played on radio.
