The anti-encroachment squad of the Gorakhpur Development Authority (GDA) with additional district magistrate PK Agrawal, SP (city) Dilip Kumar carried out the demolition drive around 1 pm.
Heavy contingent of police force was deployed at the site to tackle any untoward incidents.
The anti-encroachment squad removed the tin sheds and demolished the wall constructed at Sumer Sagar Lake.
As the anti-encroachment drive started, the land grabbers approached their political bosses who tried to mount pressure on the district officials asking them to postpone the drive but the district magistrate stuck to his guns and launched the drive.
The district magistrate has constituted a three-member inquiry committee to probe the complaints of the residents.
The people of the area, in their complaints, stated that illegal constructions around the lake are creating drainage problems in the locality. The committee headed by ADM city and SP has submitted a report to the GDA secretary.
The report stated that that around 16 acres of land belonging to the natural lake were illegally possessed by land grabbers in connivance with lekhpal and other staff.
After the report was submitted, the district magistrate has directed the GDA officials to remove the encroachments but GDA officials, on one pretext or the other, was delaying the drive.
